What does big and tall actually mean?
Kiwi Sizing, a size chart service for online clothing stores, puts it simply: big sizes are made for men with a larger neck, shoulders, chest, waist and hips, and tall sizes have more length in the torso, arms and legs. Labels follow from that. XL, 2XL and 3XL add width; LT and XLT add length; 2XLT, 3XLT and 4XLT add both.
Westport Big & Tall shows how far apart the two can be. Its 3XB and 3XT shirts share a 54 to 56 inch chest, but the big size has a 34/35 inch sleeve and the tall size a 38/39 inch sleeve. How do you choose a size you can trust?
Measure your chest around the fullest part, under the arms. Then measure a shirt that fits you from the top of the shoulder to the hem. Compare both with the chart on the listing. Westport’s chart, for example, gives 3XB for a 54 to 56 inch chest and 4XB for 58 to 60 inches. A small print shop selling flag tees may use different numbers, so the inches matter more than the label.
If the shirt will be tucked in, body length matters most. If it will be worn out, as most tees and Hawaiian shirts are, check that the hem covers the waistband with your arms raised.
What about hats for bigger heads?
A flag cap is the simplest patriotic piece, but standard adjustable caps can sit high on a larger head. Measure around your head about half an inch above the eyebrows and ears, the way New Era describes it. On New Era’s fitted chart, 7 5/8 is 23 7/8 inches and 8, the largest size listed, is 25 inches. New Era’s stretch-fit L/XL covers 23 7/8 to 24 5/8 inches; other makers sell XL and XXL stretch caps with their own charts.

What else comes in big and tall?
Polos and Hawaiian shirts. A flag polo or a red, white and blue camp shirt is the dressier choice for a cookout host or a dinner. The polos and Hawaiian shirts page covers length and fabric.
Hoodies and flannels. For fall games and cool July nights, flag hoodies and flannels come in 3XL and up, and some in tall sizes.
Swim trunks. Flag board shorts and swim trunks are sold by letter size or waist. When a listing gives the waist in inches, match that number rather than the letter.
Is flag clothing respectful?
The U.S. Flag Code says the flag itself should not be used as wearing apparel or as a costume or athletic uniform. Clothing printed with a flag design is not made from a flag, and the American Legion says clothing with a flag design is acceptable as long as it is not made from an actual flag. Which pieces suit which event?
Big and tall clothing follows the same rule as any patriotic outfit: one bold piece, the rest plain. A full flag tee or a stars-and-stripes Hawaiian shirt is the bold piece at a cookout or a lake. For a ceremony or an office party, a solid navy polo or a white button-down with a small flag pin says enough. As the evening cools, a flannel or hoodie in red or navy keeps the theme without another print.

What size hat is a big head?
There is no single cutoff. On New Era's fitted chart, a 24 1/4 inch head is a 7 3/4 and a 25 inch head is an 8, the largest size on that chart. Measure around your head half an inch above the eyebrows and ears, then match the inches to the chart.
Where can I find American flag shirts in 5XL and 6XL?
Marketplace sellers list American flag shirts in 6XL and up, often printed on big and tall blanks. Check the chest measurement in inches, because a 5XL from one shop can match a 4XL from another.
