To stay cool and chafe-free on the 4th of July, wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing as the CDC advises, add a light layer of shorts or a moisture-wicking fabric wherever skin rubs, and use shade, a hat and sunscreen. Drink fluids even if you do not feel thirsty, and know the signs of heat stroke.

A 4th of July can mean ten hours outside: a morning parade, an afternoon cookout, fireworks after dark. Heat, sun and chafing affect anyone on a day like that, in any size. This page sets out what health sources say and how to dress for it. For the outfits themselves, see the plus-size 4th of July outfits page or the big and tall shirts page.

What should you wear when it is hot?

The CDC’s advice for extreme heat is to wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen, to drink plenty of fluids even before you feel thirsty, and to plan outdoor activities carefully. It also notes that sunburned skin releases heat more slowly, which makes it harder to cool off.

In practice, that points to a white or pale tee over a dark one at a midday parade, a loose dress or tunic over a fitted one, and an airy fabric. Save the navy maxi for the evening.

Situation Better choice Why
Midday sun White, pale or light prints CDC: light-colored clothing in heat
All-day wear Loose cuts: tunics, A-line, relaxed tees CDC: loose, lightweight clothing
Where skin rubs Snug bike shorts or leggings in a moisture-wicking fabric Consumer Reports: snug shorts with no inner-thigh seams; Cleveland Clinic: moisture-wicking fabrics
Bare shoulders and arms Sunscreen, or a light sleeved layer CDC: clothing that covers arms and legs

How do you prevent chafing?

Cleveland Clinic describes chafing as skin irritation from skin rubbing against something else, and says friction is always the root cause. Moisture makes it worse, and hot, humid weather means more sweat. It notes that inner thigh chafing can happen to people of all ages and body sizes.

Its prevention advice is practical:

  • Make sure clothes and shoes fit properly.
  • Avoid cotton where skin rubs: it soaks up moisture and dries slowly.
  • Choose moisture-wicking fabrics.
  • Use padding or a barrier in the right places.
  • Try an anti-chafing product, applied before you are active.

Cleveland Clinic does not name a garment. For thigh chafing, a sports dermatologist quoted by Consumer Reports suggests snug bike shorts or leggings with no inner-thigh seams, in a performance fabric rather than cotton, and says looser shorts can go over them. Under a dress or skirt, a thin close-fitting pair does the same job by keeping the thighs apart; that last step is our reading, not a medical recommendation.

How do you handle the sun?

Shade and a wide brim cover a lot of the CDC's sun advice.

The CDC’s skin cancer prevention advice applies whenever the UV index is 3 or higher: stay in the shade, wear clothing that covers your arms and legs, wear a hat with a wide brim to shade your face, ears and neck, wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher. Where covering up is not practical, it says to apply plenty of sunscreen to all exposed skin, including the ears and the back of the neck.

A wide straw hat and a light kimono or button shirt over a tank top meet most of that at once and still look like an outfit.

What changes near the water?

A lake, pool or beach adds wet fabric, which rubs more. Change out of a wet swimsuit for the walk home if you can, and pick swim bottoms with a short leg if thigh chafing bothers you. Swim dresses and tankinis with swim shorts cover that; the flag swimsuits page compares the styles and sizes.

When is heat an emergency?

Heat stroke is an emergency

The National Weather Service lists the signs of heat stroke: throbbing headache, confusion, slurred speech, nausea, dizziness, a body temperature above 103°F, hot red dry or damp skin, a rapid strong pulse, fainting or loss of consciousness. Call 911 or get the person to a hospital immediately.

The signs of heat exhaustion are heavy sweating, weakness, cool pale clammy skin, a fast weak pulse, muscle cramps, dizziness, nausea or a headache. The National Weather Service advises moving to a cooler place, loosening or removing extra clothing, applying cool wet cloths and sipping water, and getting medical care right away if symptoms last longer than an hour, the person vomits, or things get worse.

What should you pack for the day?

A water bottle, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, an anti-chafe product or a spare pair of slip shorts, and a light layer for after dark. The holidays hub covers what to wear from Memorial Day to Veterans Day.

Frequently asked questions

What are anti-chafe shorts?

Light, close-fitting shorts worn under a dress or skirt, or on their own, so the inner thighs do not rub together. Slip shorts are thin and smooth; bike shorts are a little thicker. A sports dermatologist quoted by Consumer Reports suggests snug bike shorts or leggings with no inner-thigh seams for thigh chafing.

Is cotton good for a hot 4th of July?

Cotton is breathable, but Cleveland Clinic advises avoiding it where chafing is a concern, because it soaks up moisture and dries slowly. Moisture-wicking fabrics are its pick for anything that rubs.

What should I do if my skin is already chafed?

Cleveland Clinic suggests soothing the area, for example with aloe vera gel and a thin layer of petroleum jelly. It advises contacting a healthcare provider if symptoms do not get better within a few days or get worse.
