Borrow a shirt they wear often, lay it flat and measure across the chest from armpit to armpit, then double it. Measure from the top of the shoulder to the hem for length. Check the return window before you buy, and choose sellers that accept returns on clothing. Seasonal prints bought in May for a July birthday need a window that lasts until the person can try them on.
