Patriotic holidays run from Memorial Day in late May to Veterans Day on November 11, and the right outfit changes with the day. Quiet navy, white and red suit Memorial Day and Veterans Day, which honor service members. Bold flag prints suit the 4th of July. In plus sizes and big and tall, the same pieces work for every date.

This hub explains what each day marks first, then what people wear, then where to find the clothes. The 4th of July gets its own pages.

What does each patriotic holiday mark?

Day Date What it marks
Memorial Day Last Monday in May Honors service members who died in military service. Began as Decoration Day after the Civil War; moved to the last Monday in May by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, effective 1971. A National Moment of Remembrance is held at 3 p.m. local time
Flag Day June 14 The day in 1777 when the Second Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes. A national observance since President Truman signed it into law in 1949
Independence Day July 4 The adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776
Labor Day First Monday in September Honors the achievements of American workers; a federal holiday since 1894
Veterans Day November 11 Honors all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Began as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I fighting in 1918; renamed Veterans Day in 1954

The Department of Veterans Affairs draws the line between the two November and May days clearly: Veterans Day recognizes everyone who served, while Memorial Day honors those who died in service.

When do the holidays fall in 2027?

Planning an outfit means knowing the day of the week. Using the rules above, the 2027 dates are:

Holiday 2027 date Day of the week
Memorial Day May 31 Monday
Flag Day June 14 Monday
Independence Day July 4 Sunday
Labor Day September 6 Monday
Veterans Day November 11 Thursday

Memorial Day and Labor Day always fall on a Monday, so they make three-day weekends. Flag Day, the 4th of July and Veterans Day keep their dates, so the day of the week moves each year.

What is the National Moment of Remembrance?

Congress set aside 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence in honor of those who died in service to the nation, under the National Moment of Remembrance Act of 2000. Whatever you are doing that afternoon, a cookout or a drive, it is a moment to pause.

What do people wear on these days?

For Memorial Day and Veterans Day, people attending a ceremony or a parade often dress the way they would for any respectful public event: plain navy, white or red, a collared shirt or a simple dress, perhaps a small flag pin. The U.S. Flag Code says a lapel flag pin should be worn on the left lapel, near the heart.

For Flag Day, the 4th of July and Labor Day, the mood is a celebration, and flag prints, stars and stripes are everywhere.

None of this is a rule. Dress for the event you are attending and the weather on the day. The Flag Code covers actual flags, not printed designs, and our sister site explains it in is it okay to wear American flag clothing?

What should you wear on the 4th of July?

The 4th of July is the big outfit day of the year, usually spent outdoors from a morning parade to evening fireworks. Our detailed pages cover it piece by piece:

A red, white or navy dress covers a party, and a flag tee covers a cookout. For women, a maxi or wrap dress in 1X and up works from an afternoon picnic to the fireworks; the dresses page compares the cuts and how to check length.

For men, a flag tee with navy or khaki shorts is the easy choice. Big and tall flag tees come from 3XL to 6XL and in tall lengths such as 3XLT, which add body length for the same chest; the XLT page explains the labels, and a cap in the right hat size finishes the outfit.

What works for Labor Day and early fall?

Labor Day is often the last cookout of summer, so the July wardrobe still works. You might swap the full flag prints for a plain red, white or navy piece, since the day honors workers rather than the flag itself. As evenings cool into September and October, add a layer: a flag kimono or cardigan in plus sizes, or a flag flannel or hoodie in big and tall. The polos and Hawaiian shirts page lists layers in 3XL and up.

Dressing for Veterans Day

Veterans Day is a day to thank the people who served. Some veterans wear a cap or shirt for their branch or era of service, and family members join them at parades, school assemblies and community events. If you are attending a ceremony, simple clothes in navy, white or red are always appropriate.

Branch shirts in 3XL and up

For veterans and military families who wear their branch with pride, shirts for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force come in big sizes. For gift ideas by branch and interest, our sister site has a guide to Veterans Day gifts, and our gifts page covers sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Is it okay to wear a flag shirt on Memorial Day?

You can: the Flag Code concerns actual flags rather than printed designs. Because the day honors those who died in service, you may prefer plain navy, white or red, or a small flag pin, especially for a ceremony.

When is Memorial Day in 2027?

Memorial Day falls on the last Monday in May, which in 2027 is May 31.

What should I wear on Labor Day?

Labor Day honors American workers and is usually a relaxed end-of-summer day. Casual summer clothes fit, and a red, white or blue piece works if you want the theme.
