Big and tall flag polos and Hawaiian shirts are the dressier side of 4th of July clothing. Choose a polo for a party with a dress code and a Hawaiian or camp shirt for a backyard cookout or a lake. Both come from 2XL to 6XL and in tall sizes; check chest and body length in inches before you buy.

A tee works for most of July, but some events ask for a collar. This page compares the collared options in extended sizes. For tees and swim trunks see big and tall 4th of July shirts, and for the whole section the men’s hub.

Which collared shirt suits which event?

Shirt What sets it apart Best for Wear it
Flag polo Knit, ribbed collar, button placket Parties, golf, work events Untucked or tucked
Hawaiian or camp shirt Woven, open camp collar, straight hem Cookouts, the lake, the beach Untucked
Star-print button-down Woven, point collar, curved hem Dinners, evening parties Tucked or untucked
Solid polo with a flag cap No print at all Anyone who prefers plain Either

Why choose a flag polo?

A polo looks put together without trying. Flag polos range from an all-over stars and stripes print to a solid navy or red polo with a small embroidered flag on the chest, which is the more formal of the two. Cotton pique is the classic polo knit; polyester performance polos are lighter and dry fast, which suits a hot day.

For fit, check the chest and the body length. Big and tall stores sell polos in tall sizes such as XLT and 3XLT, which keep a similar chest and add length. If polos always ride up on you, a tall size is the fix.

What makes a Hawaiian shirt different?

A Hawaiian, or aloha, shirt is a woven short-sleeve shirt with an open collar and a bold print. Smithsonian Magazine traces it to Hawaii in the 1920s or 1930s, probably when local Japanese women adapted kimono fabric for men’s shirts. Red, white and blue versions swap palms and flowers for flags, stars, eagles or fireworks.

Aloha shirts have a straight lower hem and are usually worn with the tails out rather than tucked in, so length matters more than on a tucked shirt. The hem should cover your waistband and sit around the middle of your seat. A tall size helps if regular shirts stop at the belt.

Rayon drapes and feels light, cotton is crisper, and polyester holds bright prints through many washes.

What about star-print button-downs?

A button-down printed with small stars, or a chambray shirt with white stars, reads as patriotic at a dinner or an evening party. It has a point or button-down collar and a curved hem that can be tucked in. In big and tall, the sleeve length matters: Westport lists a 34/35 inch sleeve for 3XB and a 38/39 inch sleeve for 3XT, so check the sleeve in the listing for a long-sleeve shirt.

Which prints and colors read as patriotic?

Collared shirts give you a range from loud to quiet:

  • Loud: an all-over stars and stripes print, or a Hawaiian shirt with flags, eagles or fireworks. Best at a backyard party or a lake.
  • Middle: a navy shirt with small white stars, or red and white stripes. Patriotic without shouting, good for a family gathering.
  • Quiet: a solid navy, red or white polo with a small embroidered flag on the chest. Suits a ceremony, a dinner or the office.

Pair a loud shirt with plain khaki or navy shorts, and a quiet shirt with jeans or chinos. A cap in your real hat size finishes either; the men’s hub explains fitted cap sizes for bigger heads.

How do you get the fit right?

  1. Measure your chest under the arms, around the fullest part.
  2. Measure a collared shirt that fits you, from the top of the shoulder seam to the hem.
  3. Compare both with the seller’s chart. Westport’s chart puts 4XB at a 58 to 60 inch chest, for example.
  4. For a polo or a button-down, check the shoulder seam: it should sit at the edge of your shoulder, not halfway down your arm.

Kiwi Sizing describes big sizes as adding room through the neck, shoulders, chest and waist, and tall sizes as adding length through the torso and arms. If the chest fits but the shirt is short, go tall; if the length is fine but buttons pull, go big.

What should you check in a marketplace listing?

Many big and tall flag polos and camp shirts come from small sellers. Before you buy, open the size chart image and read the chest and length in inches, look at the fiber line (rayon wrinkles more than polyester), and check the return terms. A shirt that ships from overseas can take longer than a week, so order well before the 4th.

What do you wear when it cools down?

For cooler evenings and fall games, flag hoodies and flannels come in 3XL and up. A flannel over a flag tee covers a breezy night at the fireworks.

Frequently asked questions

Is a polo or a Hawaiian shirt better for a 4th of July party?

A polo suits a party where people dress a little up, such as a club, a work event or an in-law's house. A Hawaiian or camp shirt suits a backyard cookout or a lake. Both come in big and tall sizes with flag and star prints.

Should a Hawaiian shirt be tucked in?

No. Camp and Hawaiian shirts are cut with a straight hem to be worn untucked, so choose the length so the hem covers your waistband without reaching mid-thigh.

Do big and tall polos come in tall lengths?

Yes. Big and tall stores sell polos in tall sizes such as XLT and 3XLT, which add length to the body. American flag polos in big and tall also appear from marketplace sellers; check the body length in the listing.

What fabric is coolest for a summer shirt?

Lightweight, loose and light-colored is the CDC's advice for clothing in heat. Rayon and linen blends drape and breathe, cotton pique polos breathe well, and polyester performance polos dry quickly.
