What about graphic flag tees?
Flag tees range from a full stars-and-stripes print to a small flag on the chest. A crew neck sits higher; a V neck opens the neckline. Many graphic tees are printed by small shops on a straight-cut blank, so check the hip measurement as well as the chest. If the listing shows a women’s cut (sometimes called a fitted or ladies’ cut), it is shaped at the waist and can run smaller than a unisex tee in the same letter size, so read the chart for that cut.

When is a tank top the better choice?
On the hottest days and under a layer. A star-print tank under a light kimono covers a long day: kimono on for sun at a parade, off in the shade at a cookout. The CDC’s sun advice favors clothing that covers arms where you can, plus broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher on skin that stays bare, so a tank alone needs sunscreen on the shoulders.
Why choose a tunic?
A tunic gives length. It reaches the hip or upper thigh, so it sits comfortably over leggings, bike shorts or skinny jeans. Split necklines and side slits make tunics easy to move in. A red tunic with navy leggings is a full 4th of July outfit with no flag print. Check the listed length: one shop’s tunic can be another shop’s long tee.
Measuring a top
Lay a top that fits you flat on a table. Measure across the chest from armpit to armpit and double it, then measure from the top of the shoulder to the hem. Compare those inches with the seller’s garment chart. If the chart lists body measurements instead (bust, waist, hip), measure yourself instead of the shirt.
Which sleeves and fabrics work best?
Sleeve choice is personal. Cap sleeves sit high on the shoulder; flutter sleeves are loose and wide; elbow and 3/4 sleeves cover more of the arm and add sun protection. Wider armholes are more comfortable in heat, so look for a listed sleeve opening on tops you plan to wear all day.
Fabric decides how a top behaves in the wash. The FTC requires textile labels to show the fiber content, the country of origin and the maker or seller, so every top you buy will tell you its fibers. Cotton breathes but can shrink in a hot wash; cotton and polyester blends hold their shape; polyester and spandex stretch and dry fast.
